– Dal Chand Chaudhary
Every international holiday begins long before the flight takes off. It starts with choosing the right itinerary, applying for visas, packing bags, and wondering whether everything will come together as planned.
As Dal Chand Chaudhary and his wife stepped into Copenhagen, they couldn't have known just how much Scandinavia would surprise them. Over the next nine days, they would sail across seas, travel through majestic fjords, wander historic Nordic cities, ride a mountainside funicular, and discover why Norway would become the highlight of their journey.
Their story began in Denmark.
Denmark Opened the Door to Scandinavia
The journey began in Copenhagen, a city where royal history, colourful waterfronts, and lively streets come together effortlessly. Dal Chand and his wife explored many of the Danish capital's best-known landmarks during a guided city tour. They admired the iconic Little Mermaid, strolled past the elegant Christiansborg Palace, and soaked in the cheerful atmosphere around Nyhavn, where brightly painted buildings lined the canal, and cafés overlooked the water.
One of the highlights of the first day was Tivoli Gardens. Filled with beautifully landscaped pathways, charming architecture, and a festive atmosphere, it offered a wonderful introduction to Scandinavian culture before the adventure truly began.
Leaving Copenhagen behind, they crossed one of Denmark's remarkable sea bridges before arriving in Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Walking through the historic streets and seeing the town where the beloved storyteller once lived added a literary touch to the journey. Later, the route continued to Aarhus before reaching Hirtshals, where the next chapter began aboard a ferry crossing the North Sea.
As the coastline slowly disappeared behind them, the excitement of entering Norway began to build. The ferry journey itself became one of those travel moments that reminded them that sometimes getting there can be just as memorable as the destination.
Norway Became the Highlight of the Journey
From the moment they arrived in Kristiansand, Norway seemed determined to impress.
The drive along the southern coastline introduced them to dramatic landscapes unlike anything they had seen before. Quiet fishing towns, colourful wooden houses, sparkling fjords, and winding coastal roads made every stretch of the journey worth watching from the window. Stops in charming places like Flekkefjord added even more character before they reached the picturesque harbour town of Stavanger.
The following days revealed why Norway is celebrated as one of the world's most spectacular destinations.
They paused at the famous Swords in Rock monument before travelling through tunnels carved deep beneath the sea, crossing bridges that linked islands together, and boarding scenic ferry rides that carried them along Norway's magnificent fjord coast. Every turn seemed to reveal another breathtaking panorama.
In Bergen, they rode the funicular to Mount Fløyen, where sweeping views stretched across colourful rooftops, surrounding mountains, and the sparkling Bergen Fjord. Looking down at the city from above, it became easy to understand why Bergen is often called the gateway to the fjords.
The scenery became even more spectacular as they travelled towards Sognefjord. Along the way, they stopped at the beautiful Tvindefossen Waterfall before boarding a fjord cruise between Gudvangen and Aurland. Surrounded by towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and peaceful blue waters, the cruise became one of the most memorable experiences of the entire holiday. Crossing the world's longest road tunnel and passing the beautifully preserved Borgund Stave Church only added to a day already filled with unforgettable sights.
By the time they reached Oslo, Norway had already delivered the standout moments of the journey.
Royal Cities, Scenic Roads, and Memories to Take Home
The adventure continued into Sweden, where another side of Scandinavia began to unfold.
After exploring Oslo on a guided sightseeing tour and walking through the remarkable Vigeland Sculpture Park, Dal Chand and his wife travelled through forests, lakes, and peaceful countryside before stopping in the charming town of Örebro. Its beautiful lakeside setting and historic castle offered a relaxing pause before they continued towards Stockholm.
The Swedish capital welcomed them with a completely different atmosphere. Built across fourteen islands, Stockholm combined royal history with waterfront beauty at every turn. During the guided tour, they explored the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan, admired the Royal Palace, saw the Nobel Museum, and enjoyed panoramic views from the Fjällgatan viewpoint. Every corner seemed to reveal another elegant building or scenic waterfront.
The final leg of the journey brought them back towards Denmark, with ferry crossings connecting Sweden and Helsingør before the route returned to Copenhagen. Looking back across the countries they had travelled through, it was remarkable how much variety had been packed into just over a week. Historic cities, charming towns, mountain landscapes, dramatic fjords, and unforgettable ferry journeys had all become part of one continuous adventure.
Why Dal Chand Recommends Thrillophilia for Scandinavia
Planning a journey across multiple countries involves countless moving parts, and one of the biggest strengths of this itinerary was how seamlessly everything came together. Guided city tours, hotel stays, ferry crossings, scenic cruises, mountain excursions, and daily transfers followed a well-organised schedule, allowing Dal Chand and his wife to enjoy the experience as it unfolded simply.
Looking back, one destination stood above all the others.
"The Norway part was excellent."
Its fjords, mountain roads, coastal towns, and spectacular natural scenery became the defining memories of the trip and the experience they spoke about most after returning home.
Dal Chand also shared a thoughtful suggestion that could make future journeys even more enjoyable for senior travellers. Since the itinerary covers several countries in nine days, many travel days involve long drives of around 500 kilometres. While this allows visitors to experience a remarkable variety of destinations within a limited timeframe, he felt that a slightly more relaxed pace would add even greater comfort for elderly travellers.
Even with that suggestion, his overall experience remained highly positive.
"I will recommend this tour to everyone."
For Dal Chand and his wife, this Scandinavian adventure became far more than a sightseeing holiday. It was a journey through colourful capitals, peaceful coastal towns, unforgettable ferry rides, and some of the most spectacular fjords in the world, a collection of experiences that came together to create memories they will cherish for years to come.
