Tales from the Trail: Jayanthi's Review for Annapurna Base Camp Solo Trek
I was lying on my couch in my apartment, watching some web series, when the bright sun poured into my eyes through the window. That was the moment when I felt a weird restlessness stir up inside of me. Life had become too predictable, with the same things being repeated all over again, everyday - work, social events, and OTT-based entertainment.
"There has to be something more to life..." I thought to myself while scrolling aimlessly on Instagram.
That’s when an ad showed up on the screen - Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Lush greenery, towering mountain peaks, and stunning landscapes - what more could someone ask for? And with that, I realized that travel is what my heart was seeking the most. Soon, I was going to get married, and the long-held dream of mine for a solo trip in the mountains was calling out to me.
I went ahead to check the details and Thrillophilia's package felt pretty convincing to me. So I spoke to the agents and finalized my solo adventure among the mountains.
After all, the mountains were calling, and you don't hang up when they do.
The Arrival
Usually, most of the people on a trip fantasize about how good the stay or breakfast would be. But not me, I was too stunned by the natural beauty of Pokhara, 'The City of Lakes'.
After I checked into the tea house, I immediately headed out to explore the nearby lakeside area. It was at this moment, that the realization hit me like a rock, I had managed to break out of the repetitive routine.
The dazzling waters of Phewa Lake, surrounded by the iconic Annapurna mountain range, felt magical. As I walked along the lakeside, I took a look at the street vendors and local shops, selling delicious Nepali snacks and unique handicrafts.
The laid-back ambiance was such a contrast to my routine life back home, and a sense of peace soon took over me. Locals in the area were very welcoming and their smiles carried a warmth that could make anyone feel at home.
A casual walk around my tea house was all that I needed to spark my excitement for the upcoming adventure. All of it made me highly anticipate the trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
Through Diverse Landscapes
The trek began on the second day, and I headed from Nayapul to Ghandruk. The natural landscapes are always spellbinding but it feels a lot different when you're on a trail. I think while navigating the trails, I discovered why people across the globe love trekking expeditions. I believe the love for a trek comes from the slow exploration that lets you absorb the beauty all around you.
As I walked along the Modi Khola River, I got a chance to explore some dense rhododendron forests which I found to be very beautiful. I even passed through some charming villages such as Tikhedhunga and Ulleri, where I met the Gurung people. Over there, I got to know about their way of life in the mountains.
With every step that I took, I came across a new scenery, including glimpses of the snow-covered Annapurna mountain range.
"How can I look at something a hundred times in a day, and still feel fascinated?", I thought to myself.
The changing landscapes left me speechless - from dense forests to endless views of the mountains. As I moved further, I realized that this trek wasn't about reaching the destination, but about finding more about myself and what I want from my life.
Fellow travelers made the experience even better. With every step, joy filled the air - fellow travelers turned into friends, making the experience extra special with laughter and stories.
A Trekker’s Revelation
While most trekkers celebrate reaching their destination the most, I found myself thrilled by the journey itself. It made me think whether a trekker could become so engaged in the surrounding beauty that the ultimate destination slips quietly from their mind.
But then, I reached there and realized how wrong I was...because the Base Camp was just as beautiful as the trails leading to it. To be fair, I had not felt a sense of satisfaction in this way ever before!
Upon my arrival, I could notice myself surrounded by majestic peaks such as Annapurna I and Machhapuchchhre. I suddenly felt a rapid rush of emotions like gratitude, pride, and amazement - it was such a unique feeling.
"If heaven were real, I'd want it to look like that," one of the fellow travelers remarked.
I couldn't come up with better words to describe how the scenery looked or the way that I felt, but I was glad someone could. The beauty of the Himalayas, in the rawest form, seemed like a place that existed outside of time and space. I felt a deep connection to Mother Nature at that moment, and briefly, it seemed as if I were a part of it too.
The clouds gliding across the mountains cast shadows that changed with the chilly winds. I took a deep breath, and could even sense the scent of pine trees - it's crazy how much we miss out on...living in urban towns.
As the prayer flags fluttered with the wind, I prayed for the peace and well-being of my fellow travelers, family, and friends back home. After taking in the superb views, I began my journey down the mountain, overflowing with moments of introspection and a sense of fulfillment.
We even made a stop at Jhinu Village, where I took a refreshing dip in the natural hot springs with my fellow travelers. After days of navigating across challenging trails, it was a great way to let out the physical exertion.
The local culture, the welcoming villagers, and the simple joys of sharing a journey with other explorers - the entire experience was wholesome. I found a renewed sense of appreciation for the natural beauty around me and a stronger sense of my own being.
