Happiness Unlocked: Shivani’s Romantic Respite in Mauritius

Happiness Unlocked: Shivani’s Romantic Respite in Mauritius

Happiness comes in waves

My husband often quotes this whenever we spend a day together that goes down beautifully in our memory lane.

When I started planning for my honeymoon with my husband we wanted to enjoy every moment which felt like a serene day with the sea waves gently lapping at our feet. And which place could be better than Mauritius where we can get our dose of Vitamin Sea and cherish unlimited memories?

Greetings from the sea and sunshine
As soon as we boarded the plane bound for Mauritius, we could feel the budding excitement that filled our bodies. The excitement turned into a beautiful surprise when we were greeted by the stunning aerial views of Mauritius on our plane.

The balmy air and the blue skies glittering with powdery clouds of Mauritian airspace welcomed us to kickstart our honeymoon vacation which we had planned for months.

Our trip began in the Paradise Island of Mauritius where we started our vacation at Blue Bay Beach. The softness of the glittering golden sands and the sound of waves crashing in the turquoise-blue ocean left us enchanted.

Witnessing an array of marine life in front of our eyes in crystal-clear waters was a mind-blowing experience.

More to Mauritius rather than beaches
When we thought Mauritius was just about alluring beaches and turquoise waters, our trip planner of Thrillophilia guided us in adding visits to many unique places in Mauritius.

One of the places which really caught my eye was Champ de Mars where we saw horse racing.

The locals had their bets on different horses and it was an amazing experience to see the frenzy. My husband and I clicked many memorable photos here and savoured a delicious Mauritian breakfast that boasted egg roti and waffles.

After an adrenaline-fueled morning at the historical race course, we headed to Kuanfu Ripe Black Tea Art Center & Museum. ‘I have tasted one of the best black teas in my life here’, my husband remarked during the tea-tasting experience at the tea shop.

We got to know that this tea is made from harvested leaves which are fermented for 365 days and we even got a can of a thousand-year-old tea as a souvenir to add to my esteemed collection of unique teas from all over the world.

On the northern part of the island, we also visited Le Port Ship Model Factory and Showroom where we learned about the nuances of model ship-building and then explored the souvenir section which boasted a variety of ships, planes and jewellery. I got a few pieces of earrings for my mother and sister as a souvenir from Mauritius.

My husband especially insisted on adding a visit to Le Caudan Waterfront Casino for one of the evenings. I asked him, ‘Are you sure we are going to have our moment for winner-winner chicken dinner?’.

My husband said, ‘When I have you with me, I am sure that I am not coming back empty-handed.’ Ah! The romance in the air of Mauritius had worked its magic on my not-so-expressive husband as well!

We indulged in a game of Black Jack and Roulette where we won some of our bets and enjoyed a delicious dinner. After enjoying a memorable night with my husband, we called it a night and retreated back to our luxurious resort.

The ocean views from our beachfront villa were marvellous which never bored us. And the scenic roads of Mauritius, Aaah! I wish I could swap my daily morning route for these winding roads crossing through the verdant forests of Mauritius.

Travelling through these picturesque roads, the next place we explored was the Citadel Fort and basked in the glorious views of Port Louis. The serenity of this fort won our hearts along with the informative tour of the museum and art gallery.

After a sumptuous Mauritian lunch, we went to Aapravasi Ghat, one of the major UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mauritius. It was exciting to see the exhibition dedicated to the indentured labourers at the immigration depot in Mauritius here.

When we returned to our resort, I was surprised by my husband with a pre-arranged candlelight dinner by the beach. ‘It feels like I am in a dream from which I never want to wake up’, I said.

My husband gave me a tight hug and said ‘You deserve all the happiness in the world. I love you so much. And this was the moment, I realised had won the lottery in life by marrying this amazing human.

Adventure and astonishing places

The next part of our trip was planned in a beautiful way in the southern part of the island. It was full of astounding places and adventure-filled activities which never gave us a moment to be bored of.

When we went to the Valley of Colours, an esteemed adventure park, I insisted on trying zip-lining. The adrenaline rush I felt while zipping over the stunning natural landscapes is something I can never forget! I wish we had more time to enjoy more adventures like trekking and quad biking here.

The next place on our bucket list was Trou Aux Cerfs where we saw a dormant volcano for the first time in our lives. In awe of the beautiful surroundings, we clicked many pictures here.

We concluded our explorations in Mauritius at the Grand Bassin which is known for a magnificent statue of Lord Shiva and a sacred lake revered by locals and tourists alike.

With hearts full of love, our fairytale romance in Mauritius ended when we boarded our flight back to our home from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Looking at my boarding pass, I realised that just like my journey with my husband started with our honeymoon, our love affair with Mauritius had just begun.

The natural beauty won our hearts and we can’t wait to return to this dreamy island and recreate our beautiful memories sometime in the future.

Though we bid farewell to Mauritius knowing that the sound of ocean waves will forever echo in our souls.
