Swati’s Unforgettable Family Adventure in Denmark with Thrillophilia

Sitting in a gorgeous local cafe in Copenhagen, my father was trying to order a few local dishes and this is what he sounded like-

Dad: “Excuse me, can I have a Ss-mau-rree-brod (Smørrebrød), Free-ka-deller (Frikadeller) and Tartlets for each one of us?”

All of us looked at each other, trying hard not to laugh. The waiter looked so confused that he had to take a minute to understand what my dad was referring to. Then, the waiter calmly pointed out the dishes on the menu that he thought my dad was talking about and luckily, he guessed it right!

It was a fun moment for all of us, seeing Dad trying his best to pronounce Danish dishes. The waiter barely left, and all of us burst into laughter. That was not it, we playfully kept reminding my dad about it for the rest of the trip!

Our family trip to Denmark is full of such funny and memorable moments that I am going to cherish forever. So, allow me to walk you through some more unforgettable moments like this from our amazing family trip.

City Sights From The Waves!

The Copenhagen classic sightseeing canal tour with my family was an experience I’ll always cherish! While gliding through the scenic canals, I got to enjoy up-close views of the city's most iconic sights-

A beautiful start to the journey was the colourful facades of Nyhavn, a historic harbour area that truly captures the city’s vibrant spirit. We then cruised past the famous Little Mermaid statue, which looked even more magical from the boat. Other highlights included the striking Royal Danish Opera House and the Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish royals.

Our guide kept the trip engaging by sharing fascinating stories and insights about each landmark we passed. For anyone wanting to see Copenhagen’s waterfront and famous sights in one go, this canal tour is the ideal way to do it!

Relaxing at my own Rhythm!

During this trip, I made sure to include at least two leisure days to explore Copenhagen at my own pace. I believe that to truly experience a place, you need more than just ticking off the main tourist spots—you have to uncover the city’s hidden treasures, walk through the neighbourhoods, engage with the people, try various foods, and simply soak up the local beauty.

That is why I absolutely loved exploring Copenhagen’s lively coffee culture. I have no idea how, but we became a regular at The Coffee Collective, where they serve some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. We also enjoyed visiting La Glace where we relished the iconic Danish Kringle pastry.

After conversing with some locals who suggested some lesser-known spots such as the Assistens Cemetery, we were ready to explore more. It was a peaceful location, ideal for unwinding and relaxing. We had a really nice time there, retrospecting and engaging in nostalgic conversations.

During our time in Copenhagen, we couldn’t miss a trip to the Botanical Garden. It was such a peaceful spot, filled with amazing plants from all over the world. It was the perfect break from the busy city vibe, just a nice, relaxing place to unwind and enjoy nature.

We took full advantage of our leisure time, hunting for the perfect souvenirs to remember our trip — after all, no journey feels complete without them! So, all of us rolled up our sleeves and explored a number of shops. Eventually, we were able to find the ideal momentos- Little Mermaid figurines, Danish butter cookies, postcards, and fridge magnets. These keepsakes now serve as cherished reminders of our wonderful family adventure in Copenhagen.

In every way, these leisure days allowed us to truly connect with the city and make memories beyond the usual sightseeing experience.

Sweden in a Snapshot!

One of the many reasons why this trip was so unique (and the best one till date) is because we got to explore two countries together! One day we were in Denmark and the next, in Sweden!

With just one day in our hands, we could only cover Malmo and Lund, however, these two picturesque cities were all we needed to experience the charm of Sweden!

In Malmo, we were drawn to the fascinating mix of modern and historic landmarks. Our first stop was the iconic Turning Torso, Scandinavia's tallest building, from where we enjoyed breathtaking views of the city. The next stop was Malmo Castle, equally captivating, where we felt as if we were transported to a bygone era. Wandering around Lilla Torg, the city’s lively square with charming cafes and boutiques, was also a delightful way to experience the Swedish local culture.

Lund, by contrast, felt like a well-kept secret, with its old-world charm, cobblestone streets and mediaeval architecture stealing our hearts. The moment we stepped into the Lund Cathedral, we were taken aback by its beauty and grand architecture.

Relieving the Moments!

Thinking about the good times we spent in Denmark, I feel very content and happy. I still remember the moment when we were flying back to India from Denmark, my parents looked at me and said, “We are very proud of you!"

Hearing those words made all the effort and expenses worthwhile. At that moment, I felt at the top of the world. After years of struggle, I was finally able to give my family this unforgettable experience.

This trip made me realise that I had truly achieved everything I had ever dreamed of, and it was a proud, fulfilling moment for me.
