With the Blessings of Nature- Tarun’s Honeymoon Trip Review of Sri Lanka
After a long day of rituals and attending to guests, Tarun and his wife sat in silence, munching on candies.
They still had not decided where to go for their honeymoon and were quite stressed about it.
Then all of a sudden, Tarun’s wife sat up straight, looked at him, and said,
“Candy”
“What?”
“Kandy!!”
“Huh?”
“We can go to Kandy, Sri Lanka!”
“You got that idea from…oh I see…”
There were too many wrappers on the floor, and he knew then.
She particularly wanted to have a very happening and adventurous trip, not a typical romantic one. He immediately started searching for Sri Lanka tour packages. And the first website that popped up was Thrillophilia.
Having travelled with them before, they were confident about Thrillophilia’s services and immediately sent for an enquiry. Then the course of time from booking the trip to packing their bags and sitting on the plane passed like a whiff of air.
The Dance of Fire and Rain
Kandy welcomed them with a drizzle.
And touring the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in that ambience was a treat to the soul.
Elephants were rejoicing in the rain, running and swaying their trucks, raising them at times as if to thank the rain god. They heard trumpets, saw them hitting their feet on the ground to eat salt, and then talking around happily.
Tarun and his wife felt happy seeing these majestic creatures live their life so freely. It was a boon to them that Sri Lanka provided them with enough safety and care for them to thrive. What the couple could gauge from the overall atmosphere of the place was that conserving nature was something of importance to them- even within local communities, the need to safeguard nature was a major factor.
With a wide grin on their faces, they stopped at a local restaurant to savour a taste of Sri Lanka’s culinary gems- so they went for a plate of jackfruit curry and bread with some sauteed vegetables. It was a delectable meal, and they could taste all the amazing ground spices used to create this marvellous dish.
Their hotel in Kandy was a delight to the eyes, with top-notch services, amenities, and very respectful staff. And the cherry on top- there was also a swimming pool! After taking some rest for noon, they headed out for a nice long exploration of Lake Kandy, and then to watch the Kandy dance performance named Gini Sisila.
The couple did not know what to expect, and they enjoyed the dance in the beginning. But their enjoyment turned into a mixture of thrill and amusement when they saw how this traditional dance took a huge turn to involve walking over and playing with fire towards the end.
It was still raining, and the performance was taking place in the open air.
Tarun and his wife felt chills roll down their spines, raising goosebumps all over their body. The warmth from the fire and the cold rain created a surreal ambience, throwing them into a spiral of gasps.
Falls, Lakes, and a Touch of Myth
Ramboda Falls- the 11th tallest falls of Sri Lanka- took their breath away.
Its cascading waters throwing milky mists high up in the air was nothing less than a wonder to behold.
In fact, from the moment they entered the region of Nuwara Eliya, they were greeted with the best of nature- from expansive tea plantations and some waterfalls here and there on the way, to the exquisite views of the mountains and meadows around.
But what appealed to them the most was their boating experience in Gregory Lake.
Its banks resembled a sweet European town and the clear blue skies enhanced the scenery. They glided through the waters giggling and sharing some moments of respite, perhaps thanking their stars for having come to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon- for it was not just offbeat a choice for this occasion, but was also a secluded one.
Their visit to the Hanuman Temple and the Seetha Amman Temple certainly made their jaws drop. Everybody knew of Ramayana and the story of Sita’s abduction- but to see the actual place where Hanuman is believed to have landed first on the soil of Lanka and to explore the place where Sita stayed was a magical experience for both of them.
The trip, till now, was a mixture of culture, heritage, and natural spectacles, but the next part of the trip would open up a whole new world for them…
From Forests to Shores
Their experience of the Yala National Park was impeccable.
They saw elephants bathing, heard leopards roaring, and even caught a quick glimpse of peacocks and crocodiles. It was only when they started their elephant safari that they could spot a lot more animals- monkeys, sloth bears, and even deer!
The incredible beauty of the park was soothing to their soul, having rejuvenated them and prepared them for a fantastic journey together. It is said that elephants can feel love, and when they bless any couple, it is said to bring about a lot of happiness in your married life.
The mahout was just telling this to them when the elephant they were riding on held up its trunk and then put it down to wrap it around both their waists.
It was a sign, a good sign.
Then came the final leg of their honeymoon trip, the Bentota Beach.
And guess how they started their exploration with- a bumper boat ride! All they had to do was sit back on an inflated rubber boat, and the rest was just having fun!
The best part was snorkelling and jet skiing. While they could take some honeymoon-perfect underwater pictures while snorkelling (thanks to their instructor), their jet skiing experience was super fun.
It was a crazy beach experience that they had, something that was worth engraving in their minds.
But that was not the end, they also went for a boat ride along the mangrove forests along the Madhu River where they could spot a wide variety of colourful birds. Then finally, they spent the rest of the evening with each other, strolling on the beaches, catching a marvellous sunset, and then topping off their journey with a nice Kiribath dinner.
The entire journey had been very long and satisfying for the couple, just like their time with each other. And with this trip, they knew that they were meant to be together for the rest of their lives.
