Travelling Solo in the Lands of Canals and Romance: Vikas Pawar in the Netherlands
This is the story of Vikas Pawar, an adventurous solo traveller who dared to explore the Netherlands and parts of Europe, all by himself. With a heart full of dreams and a bag packed with essentials, Vikas embarked on a journey that took him through Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris. For him, it was an ultimate experience that reshaped his perspective on life, freedom, and the beauty of solo trips.
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
When I first signed up for Thrillophilia’s European Classic Tour, I was not entirely sure what to expect. The idea of travelling solo had always seemed overwhelming. Would I feel lonely? Would I get lost in translation? But the pull of adventure was stronger than my doubts. I wanted to prove to myself that I could step out of my comfort zone and explore the world on my own terms.
From the moment I arrived in Amsterdam, I felt a sense of liberation. With picturesque canals, charming architecture, and a culture that embraced individuality, the city welcomed me like an old friend. After checking into my hotel, I set out to explore the nearby streets. The air was fresh, the lights reflected on the canal waters, and the sound of bicycle bells filled the atmosphere.
It was the perfect introduction to the journey ahead.
A Story of Windmills and Canals
My second day began with a healthy Dutch breakfast and an itinerary that promised adventure. A visit to Zaanse Schans, with its iconic windmills and serene wooden houses, transported me to a simpler and more picturesque world. The sight of the windmills spinning lazily against a blue sky was almost meditative.
Next, I ventured to the fishing village of Volendam, which looked like a place from the storybook. I boarded a small boat across the tranquil Ijsselmeer Lake and let the peaceful surroundings wash over me. There was something magical about being surrounded by water, with the distant hum of life on the shore.
As the day drew to a close, I explored the vibrant streets and famous canal network of Amsterdam on a boat cruise. Illuminated under the evening sky, the city looked like a painting come to life. I remember sitting quietly, letting the calm waters and twinkling lights remind me of how beautiful the world could be.
The Next Destination was Brussels
Leaving Amsterdam was bittersweet, but Brussels awaited. The three-hour drive gave me time to reflect on my experiences so far. When I arrived, the sight of the Grand Place immediately took my breath away. Surrounded by intricately detailed buildings, I felt like I had stepped into a living museum.
The Atomium, with its futuristic design, was another highlight. Standing beneath its gleaming spheres, I could not help but marvel at how art and science could merge to create something so iconic. The city offered a unique blend of old-world charm and contemporary innovation - a reflection of Europe’s ability to balance history with modernity.
Stopping at a café, I treated myself to Belgian waffles, and their rich sweetness perfectly mirrored the warmth of the city. Here, I began to understand the charm of solo travel: the freedom to linger, to savour, and to soak in every detail without distractions.
Realising My Dream in Paris
If Amsterdam was enchanting and Brussels inspiring, Paris was everything I had ever dreamt of. Known as the City of Light and Love, it seemed as though every corner of Paris had a story to tell.
Versailles Palace was my first stop, and it was indeed a living proof of the grandeur of French history. Walking through its sprawling gardens, I imagined the lives of the monarchs and rulers who once roamed these grounds. It was a humbling experience that reminded me of the timelessness of human ambition and creativity.
Montmartre, with its artistic soul, was my next destination. I took the funicular to the top of the hill, where the Sacré-Cœur Basilica stood proud against the sky. The cobbled streets below were alive with painters, musicians, and storytellers - a vibrant tapestry of culture that left me spellbound.
The highlight of my time in Paris, however, was standing on top of the Eiffel Tower. When I looked out over the city from there, I felt a rush of emotions - gratitude, surprise, and a deep sense of accomplishment. I had made it here, on my own, and it was a moment I would treasure forever.
Lessons from the Road
Travelling solo across the Netherlands was not just about the places I visited; it was about the lessons I learned along the way.
In Amsterdam, I rediscovered the beauty of slowing down and being present. On the contrary, I learned the importance of embracing contrasts in Brussels - between history and modernity, solitude and connection. And in Paris, I realized the value of chasing dreams, no matter how intimidating they may seem.
One moment that stood out was during a boat cruise on the Seine. The gentle sway of the boat, the glow of Parisian lights, and the hum of soft conversations around me created a perfect blend of peace and wonder. It was at that moment I understood the true essence of travel - it is not about the distance covered but the memories created.
As I boarded my flight back to India, I carried more than just souvenirs. I returned with a renewed sense of self, a heart full of gratitude, and memories that would last a lifetime.
For anyone thinking about a solo adventure, I would say this: take the leap. The world is vast, beautiful, and full of stories waiting to be discovered. And sometimes, the best travel companion you can have is yourself.
