Ever since I was a little girl, Christmas has always been my favourite time of the year. I have always dreamt of celebrating Christmas like the ones I’d seen in movies— sparkling lights, cosy scarves, and snowy streets straight out of a fairytale. London, with its charm and grandeur, had always been the backdrop of this dream.

So when I gifted my husband his dream watch for Christmas, I teased him, saying, “Now, what’s my surprise?”

Little did I know, he was holding on to something magical. Just a week before Christmas, he handed me a pair of tickets— London, here we come!

It felt surreal— this Christmas, I was going to live my childhood fantasy with the man I loved most.

A Day of Gourmet Treats!

Our adventure began the moment we landed, the festive cheer of London wrapping around us like a warm blanket. We had requested Thrillophilia to add Borough Market (London’s largest and oldest food market) as our first stop— a Christmas wonderland for food lovers like us.

The market buzzed with energy, filled with the laughter of locals and the scent of mulled wine, cinnamon, and roasted chestnuts. It was like stepping into a Charles Dickens novel, only with more food stalls!

We decided to taste everything we could. From warm mince pies and Yorkshire puddings to freshly baked pastries and hot chocolate so rich it felt like a hug in a cup— we were in foodie heaven.

My husband kept sneaking bites from my plate, and I playfully scolded him, “Get your own!” but secretly, I loved every bit of it. We strolled through the market hand-in-hand, soaking in the festive vibes, listening to carol singers in the distance, and marvelling at the twinkling lights.

Twirl at Somerset!

The next day, my husband and I tried something we’d never done before— ice skating at Somerset House. At first, I flat-out refused- “You know I’ll fall flat on my face,” I argued, clinging to my hot coffee. But he, being the persuasive romantic that he is, convinced me to give it a shot.

The ice rink, surrounded by the stunning Georgian architecture of Somerset House, looked straight out of a snow globe. I hesitantly stepped onto the ice, wobbling like a baby deer. My husband held my hand, guiding me slowly, and before I knew it, we were gliding— well, almost.

To be honest, we did fell a few times, laughing so hard that people around us probably thought we were crazy. I remember one moment when we both tumbled and just lay there on the ice, staring up at the twinkling lights strung above us.

“This is a disaster,” I giggled. “No,” he said, smiling, “this is perfect.” And it was. By the end of it, I didn’t want to leave. Who knew ice skating could be so magical?

Gallery Hopping!

To balance the fun with a little sophistication, we spent the next day exploring London’s iconic art galleries.

First on our list was The King’s Gallery, where we admired royal masterpieces that felt like windows into history. The gallery was housed in a grand, regal building, with its high ceilings and ornate decor giving off an air of sophistication. We paused at one particularly striking portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, her commanding gaze almost making us feel like we were standing before royalty.

At the Guildhall Art Gallery, we marveled at the Roman amphitheater and stunning masterpieces. The ancient ruins of the building provided a stark contrast to the vivid Victorian paintings that adorned the walls. The paintings themselves were full of emotion, each one telling a unique story.

Next, we wandered through Tate Modern, an industrial marvel showcasing contemporary art. I stood mesmerized by one of the installations- a large, chaotic web of metallic threads suspended from the ceiling, creating a sense of entanglement and complexity. We also visited the Lightroom for its immersive displays and the Serpentine Galleries for their bold, modern exhibits.

The Night of Christmas!

The most magical day of all, the day I had been waiting for, was Christmas Eve. London transformed into a scene straight out of a holiday movie. The air was filled with the smell of freshly baked cookies and the faint sound of carols.  Streets glimmered with festive lights, and shop windows sparkled like treasure chests.

We dressed in our best outfits, ready to celebrate in style. Our first stop was the London Christmas Market, where we shopped for souvenirs— little snow globes, handmade ornaments, and a scarf that my husband insisted looked “so London” on me.

We listened to live choirs singing Christmas carols and treated ourselves to warm, gooey desserts that melted in our mouths. At the heart of the market stood a massive Christmas tree, glowing brighter than anything I’d ever seen.

As the night grew colder, we made our way to the London Eye for the perfect finale. The city sparkled below us like a sea of diamonds, each light telling a story of joy and celebration.

As we reached the top, I looked out at the skyline— Big Ben glowing in the distance, the Thames reflecting the city lights, and the festive buzz all around. My husband wrapped his arm around me, and for a moment, everything felt still.

“Merry Christmas,” he whispered.

I leaned my head on his shoulder, my heart full. It was the kind of moment you want to freeze forever— just us, the twinkling city below, and the overwhelming gratitude for everything we shared. And as I stood there on the London Eye, falling in love with the city and my husband all over again, I knew this was the best Christmas I’d ever had.

For Aashi Verma, this European trip was something she and her mom had dreamt of for years. But life kept getting in the way with work, responsibilities, and everything in between.

During dinner one night, they finally said, “Let’s stop waiting and just do it.” That conversation turned years of dreaming into a decision.

Aashi and her mother contacted the Thrillophilia team, who helped them plan the entire itinerary. This way, the two of them were ready to explore Europe together.

They landed in Paris on a cool spring morning to begin their magical two-week journey through Europe.

The Lively City of Paris

Their first evening in Paris was all about getting comfortable and soaking it all in. After a warm Indian dinner arranged through the trip package, they returned to their hotel. Aashi’s mother was always fond of Paris, and when she finally saw the Eiffel Tower shining under the night sky, tears came to her eyes.

The next morning, they started their day with the Eiffel Tower. They also saw the famous Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo at the Louvre. Later, they went on a cruise along the Seine River. As the boat passed under the old bridges and beautiful buildings, Aashi looked at her mother as she was lost in the gorgeous views of the surroundings.

On the third day, they chose to slow down and soak it all in at their own pace. They walked through cobbled streets, tried delicious pastries, and spent time window-shopping. It was indeed a quiet and happy day.

From Chocolates to Canals

On Day 4, Aashi and her mother drove to Brussels in Belgium. The city had a warm and lively vibe. At the Grand Palace, they were amazed to see the buildings and the buzz of people around them. They clicked fun photos near the famous Mannekin Pis statue. “He is smaller than I expected,” Aashi laughed.

They also explored the beautiful St. Michael’s Cathedral. The smell of fresh Belgian waffles was all around the street. They could not resist and grabbed a warm and crispy one to share.

They continued their journey and arrived in Amsterdam, Netherlands. As they saw the calm canals and colourful houseboats, they were surprised.

They visited the Royal Palace and then walked around the Dam Square, where street performers entertained small crowds. Aashi’s mother had a sweet tooth, so they tried the famous stroopwafels (a thin and crispy waffle filled with caramel). They were so tasty that they picked up a few extra to take back to their hotel for a late-night snack.

Castles and Cathedrals

On Day 6, they travelled to Cologne in Germany. The first thing that they saw there was the tall Cologne Cathedral. As they stood beneath its massive towers, Aashi admired the craftsmanship. “Can you believe people built this hundreds of years ago?” she said to her mom.

From there, they travelled to Frankfurt, where they rested before heading into the stunning landscapes of Switzerland.

While driving through the Black Forest, they passed winding roads and fairytale villages. But it was the sight of Rhine Falls that impressed them. Aashi's mother stood near the edge and enjoyed the cool mist falling on her face.

In Switzerland, they took the Rotair cable car up to Mount Titlis and enjoyed a 360-degree view of the snow-covered Alps. The Cliff Walk at the top of Grindelwald First was also thrilling. Aashi could not stop laughing as she watched her mother build a snowball with childlike joy.

Later in Lucerne, they visited the Chapel Bridge and the peaceful Lion Monument. The day ended with a lake cruise and watching the sunset over the waters. Even the reflections of the mountains in the lake looked spectacular. It was one of those rare and perfect moments.

Through Liechtenstein, Austria, and Italy

Their journey continued with a halt in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. A tram ride gave them a short but lovely tour of this scenic country. Then, they explored the halls of the Swarovski Crystal World in Austria.

They also visited the Golden Roof and Innsbruck’s Old Town and watched street musicians play melodies.

Later in the trip, they arrived in the romantic city of Venice, Italy. Getting around was so different here, as there were only boats all around. They boarded a public waterbus and glided along the canal to reach Venice Island.

Their first stop was the lively St. Mark’s Square, surrounded by grand buildings, music, and flocks of pigeons. They explored the historic Doge’s Palace, and as they crossed the Bridge of Sighs, Aashi shared the story behind its name with her mother.

The most magical part of the day was their gondola ride through the narrow canals. The gondolier sang as the boat moved through the quiet waterways. Aashi looked at her mother sitting quietly and enjoying every moment with a calm smile.

Soon, they travelled to Pisa to see its popular Leaning Tower. They joined the crowd to take pictures in the same pose as the attraction. A drive to Florence led them to Piazzale Michelangelo, where they were pleased to see the view of the city under the soft Italian sunset.

Their final stop was Rome. There, Aashi and her mother explored Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. “I used to read about this in school,” her mother said while holding her hand. “And now I am here.”

While driving through the Eternal City and passing the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Piazza Venezia, it felt like travelling through the stories of emperors and artists.

As the trip came to an end, Aashi and her mother sat quietly in their hotel room in Rome and packed their bags slowly. The hotels were sometimes far from the city centres, and the days were hectic. But the laughter, the stories they shared, and the joy of discovery world had all been worth it.

When I was 17, I sat in a small living room corner, clutching my father’s old camcorder and dreaming of the neon-lit streets of New York. I wanted to study filmmaking—that was my New York.  But life, as it often does, took a turn I wasn’t ready for.

College became less about cinema and more about “what pays the bills.” The closest I came to New York City was through movie montages—Breakfast at Tiffany's, When Harry Met Sally, The Devil Wears Prada, Gossip Girls or Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind. I had promised myself though: Someday.

Fast forward to now: 23, independent, with a first paycheck that didn’t just buy coffee and bills but a ticket to my dream. It wasn’t easy convincing everyone why I wanted to go to the USA, solo, of all things. My mother made a list of "just-in-case" calls to the Thrillophilia’s POC Manjiri.

Friends said, “Won’t it get lonely?”

But in my heart, I knew where I belonged—even if it was just for a few weeks. And so, with a packed suitcase, a little nervousness, and my Thrillophilia itinerary in hand, I boarded my first international flight.

I also walked a lot—my feet carried me through cobbled streets in Brooklyn where street artists painted entire walls, and through Chinatown where shopkeepers smiled kindly even when I tried to haggle for a keychain.

In Washington, D.C., I visited museums that held history in their silence, towering monuments that whispered stories of leaders gone by. I strolled through the National Mall as cherry blossom petals floated like confetti, painting the ground pink and soft, and for a moment, I forgot the time.

Then came Chicago, a city where the skyline seemed to dance with Lake Michigan’s waves. I stumbled upon a tiny jazz club where the air smelled of whiskey and music. A saxophonist—this time playing Miles Davis—made my heart ache in the best way.

I sipped a drink I couldn’t pronounce, listened to the music, and realized how comforting it was to be a stranger in a room full of strangers. Maybe solo travel wasn’t lonely at all. Maybe it was about the company, just in a different form.

The Little Things That Make a Big Trip

Traveling solo does something magical to you. It’s not the grand things—the Statue of Liberty or The Bean in Chicago—that linger in your memory. It’s the little ones. The hot dog I ate near Central Park where ketchup dripped down my chin, the homeless man who painted vibrant street art on torn cardboard, or the cab driver who asked where I was from and proudly said, “You know, my cousin’s in India too—Bangalore!”

One evening in D.C., I sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking out at the reflecting pool bathed in twilight. Beside me, a group of kids giggled as they rolled down the steps. A mother, exasperated and smiling, called after them. I sat there alone, yet somehow not. Because travel teaches you that you’re never really alone.

The USA—big, loud, busy, and breathtaking—became a series of these moments for me. It wasn’t just about “seeing places” but about being part of them.

A Note for the Dreamers

If you’ve ever put your dreams on hold—don’t worry, they’ll wait for you. Mine waited for six years until I finally walked into New York, camera slung around my neck and eyes full of wonder.

To anyone hesitant about solo travel, here’s my advice: do it. Go to that jazz club alone, eat at a restaurant alone, and ride the subway even if you get lost. Because solo doesn’t mean lonely—it means freedom.

Oh, and before I forget: If you’re headed to New York, grab a bagel with schmear from that little shop near Central Park, and don’t miss Chicago’s deep-dish pizza (trust me, you’ll need to sit after). Washington, D.C.? Walk through the museums at your own pace and let history wrap you in its quiet embrace.

This trip was more than a vacation; it was me meeting myself in cities I’d only dreamed of. And as my flight took off from JFK Airport that final evening, I looked out the window at the glittering skyline and thought: This is where my story started. But it’s far from over.

For Rajlaxmi Katikala, this winter journey through Spiti Valley was neither about chasing thrills nor about ticking destinations off a list. It was about observing how landscapes change people, gently, without demanding anything in return.

Travelling with three companions, Rajlaxmi set out on an eight-day private winter tour of Spiti Valley with Thrillophilia. Winter was not the obvious choice. Snow had already begun to settle, roads were unpredictable, and comforts would be limited. But that uncertainty was precisely what made the journey meaningful. There were no expectations of perfection. Only curiosity.

When the Mountains Begin to Speak: Chandigarh to Narkanda

The journey began in Chandigarh, where city rhythms slowly gave way to winding mountain roads. As the Ertiga climbed toward Narkanda, the Shivalik foothills unfolded gently, wrapped in pine and deodar forests. The air changed first, cooler and sharper, and then the silence followed.

Narkanda welcomed the group with apple orchards and distant snow-capped peaks. There was no rush to explore. That evening was spent settling in, watching mist rise from the valleys, and quietly acknowledging that this was the start of something different. Winter travel demands patience, and Narkanda seemed to teach that lesson early.

Chitkul: Where Roads End and Stillness Begins

From Narkanda, the road to Chitkul felt narrower and more intimate. Crossing the Karcham Sangam Bridge, where the Sutlej meets the Baspa, marked a visible shift in terrain and mindset. The Kinnaur Valley unfolded in layers, wooden homes clinging to slopes, prayer flags fluttering in the cold wind.

Chitkul, often described as the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border, felt suspended in time. Snow dusted rooftops and fields, and silence lingered longer than conversation. For Rajlaxmi, this was not a place to do anything but a place to simply be. The night was cold, but the warmth of shared meals and quiet laughter inside the camp made it deeply comforting.

Nako: The First True Pause

The journey into Spiti truly announced itself on the drive to Nako. Passing through Reckong Peo, the towering presence of the Kinner Kailash range felt humbling. The stop at Khab, where the Sutlej and Spiti rivers merge, was brief but powerful. It was not dramatic, just deeply grounding, as if marking a threshold.

Nako felt like a storybook village. The frozen lake mirrored the surrounding peaks, willow and poplar trees standing still in the cold air. Walking around Nako Lake and visiting the monastery felt less like sightseeing and more like listening. In winter, Spiti does not reveal itself easily. It asks you to slow down.

Into the Heart of Spiti: Tabo, Gue, and Kaza

The road from Nako to Kaza was where winter travel truly made its presence known. Smooth stretches gave way to rugged paths, and every stop felt earned. At Gue Monastery, standing before the centuries-old mummy of a Buddhist lama was quietly unsettling and deeply fascinating, a reminder of time moving differently in the mountains.

Tabo Monastery followed, its ancient murals and weathered walls earning its title as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’. There was no crowd, no noise. Just history, preserved in stillness. Dhankar Village came next, dramatically perched above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, its monastery clinging to the cliffs as if defying gravity and time alike.

Arriving in Kaza felt like reaching the heart of the valley. Despite being the largest settlement in Spiti, it retained a calmness that cities often forget. The two-night stay allowed the group to rest and acclimatise, something winter travellers quickly learn to value.

High Villages and Higher Perspectives

The following day unfolded slowly around Kaza. Key Monastery stood tall, its whitewashed structure layered like steps into the sky. Inside, painted rooms and prayer halls spoke of discipline, resilience, and faith shaped by altitude.

Langza followed, where a giant Buddha statue watched over fossil-rich land, and the vastness of the valley made conversations instinctively quieter. In Hikkim, sending a postcard from the world’s highest post office felt symbolic, a message sent from isolation to the rest of the world. Komik, one of Asia’s highest villages, offered views that felt almost unreal, stark, expansive, and deeply peaceful.

Kalpa: A Return to Green and Contrast

Leaving Spiti behind, the road toward Kalpa felt like a gradual re-entry into colour. Stopping again at Dhankar and travelling along the Sutlej near Puh, the landscape slowly softened. Reckong Peo reappeared, offering uninterrupted views of the Kinner Kailash peak.

Kalpa arrived quietly. Set against towering mountains, the village felt balanced, not harsh like Spiti, not busy like towns below. That night, windows framed snow-lit peaks, and silence once again became the dominant sound.

Shimla and the Gentle Goodbye

The drive to Shimla felt almost surreal after days of rugged terrain. Roads smoothed out, structures multiplied, and human presence became more obvious. Shimla was familiar, yet after Spiti, it felt louder.

The final journey back to Chandigarh carried a different weight. There was no urgency to reach home, only reflections on how winter had reshaped the experience. This was not a trip defined by comfort, but by care.

What Stayed Behind

For Rajlaxmi Katikala, this Spiti winter journey was not about overcoming challenges, but about accepting them. Thrillophilia’s planning ensured reliable transfers, comfortable stays given the terrain, and a thoughtfully paced itinerary that respected both altitude and weather.
