A Journey to Cherish! Vikas’ Switzerland Trip Review with Thrillophilia
“To awaken alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark
This quote is what I lived through my 13 days in Switzerland and Italy. Each morning greeted me with a sense of wonder as I opened my window to stunning views of snow-capped mountains or bustling piazzas.
I found joy in getting lost in charming streets, savouring authentic dishes, and soaking in the culture around me. Here are some of my favourite experiences from my trip…
All Aboard!
My Swiss adventure was defined by two unforgettable train journeys that showcased the breathtaking beauty of the Alps.
I had heard stories about the iconic train ride- Bernina Express, but nothing could prepare me for the breathtaking landscapes that unfolded. The train gently climbed through the Swiss Alps, and I felt my heart race as the scenery transformed from rolling green hills to majestic snow-capped peaks.
Every twist and turn of the journey revealed stunning views- the shimmering Lago Bianco and the iconic Landwasser Viaduct standing tall against the backdrop of nature. I leaned against the window, snapping photos like a giddy child.
I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveller, a kind elderly woman who shared stories of her own adventures in Switzerland. “It’s moments like these that remind us how beautiful life can be,” she said, her eyes twinkling with nostalgia.
The second leg of my journey took me to Jungfraujoch, known as the "Top of Europe." The train ride was a gradual ascent into a realm of glaciers and towering peaks. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisper, and the landscape transformed into a winter wonderland.
Stepping off the train, I was met with panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. I snapped photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but nothing could truly convey the sheer majesty of the surroundings.
With each journey, I felt the thrill of adventure and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that Switzerland offers.
When in Rome
My whirlwind 48-hour marathon in Rome was nothing short of exhilarating, armed with a Rome Pass that promised access to over 45 attractions. You name the attraction and I visited it! Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, the gardens! All of them!
I think my favourite was Piazza Navona. I was too tired from all the walking, it was the hour of dusk and I just wanted to relax. But Navona Square had a completely different vibe…buzzed with life, filled with artists, street performers, and the joyful sounds of laughter. I decided to refuel at a charming café with an outdoor terrace, enjoying a classic Roman dish: Saltimbocca alla Romana with some aged wine.
I initially decided to skip the Trevi Fountain due to the usual crowds. However, as time passed, a sense of FOMO began to creep in. After all, it was a famous wish-fulfilling fountain! With only a few hours left in my adventure, I made my way to the Trevi Fountain. Excitement bubbled within me as I tossed a coin over my shoulder, making a wish and hoping that the magic of the fountain would work in my favour.
The Smallest Country in the World
Stepping into Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, felt like entering a world unto itself.
I began my exploration at the Vatican Museums, captivated by the exquisite artwork and sculptures lining the halls. An audio guide helped me appreciate the details and stories behind each piece.
But my favourite was St. Peter’s Basilica. Its breathtaking architecture left me speechless, and standing beneath the dome, I felt a sense of awe wash over me. Climbing to the top was a workout, but the panoramic views of the city made every step worth it. I could see the bustling streets below, and it struck me how this tiny nation held so much beauty and history.
After my adventure, I stopped by a charming local gelato shop, where the friendly owner shared that Vatican City has its own postal service- famed for sending letters stamped with the Vatican seal!
As I enjoyed my gelato, I reflected on my day, grateful for the unique journey that Vatican City had gifted me.
Seven Days in Swiss Bliss
My week in Switzerland was nothing short of a dream come true, filled with breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences.
And, the Swiss Pass was truly a saviour! I did all my train journeys across the country with it!
The Glacier Canyon was just an exhilarating experience. Walking along a suspended path, I was dazzled by the icy blue waters below, while the roar of the rushing river echoed in my ears. I snapped photos, but nothing could capture the sheer magic of the moment. A local later shared that the canyon is a hidden gem, often overlooked by tourists.
The highlight of my trip came at Mt. Titlis. Riding the cable car to the summit, I was filled with anticipation. Once at the top, I savoured traditional Swiss cheese fondue which became the perfect energy boost after my mountain adventure. Sitting on a terrace, I relished the dish while soaking in the stunning panoramic views.
As my week in Switzerland wrapped up, I wandered through Zurich. While strolling by the beautiful lake, I found a delightful chocolate shop. The baker, full of warmth, shared stories about his chocolates. I savoured a dark chocolate truffle that melted in my mouth, making it the perfect sweet souvenir for my loved ones back home.
