Shreya and Friends Live Their Ultimate K-Pop Dream in South Korea
Shreya’s South Korea trip was more than just a vacation- it was all about K-pop adventure, delicious food, and memories with her besties Priya and Anika. For years they fantasised of stepping into the world of their favourite idols, where K-dramas were more than just shows and every street sang their favourite songs.
As Shreya narrates, “It all started during one lazy afternoon during a binge-watching session of ‘Crash Landing On You’.
Priya suddenly exclaimed, “Why don’t we actually do it this year? Visit South Korea for real!”
Anika raised her eyebrows. “Are you serious? You mean, no more fangirling from afar?”
Shreya grinned and replied, “Let’s make it happen.”
And just like that, they were browsing through different itineraries until Thrillophilia’s South Korea package caught their attention. It was a mix of everything they wanted—culture, adventure, and, of course, all things K-pop. Tickets were booked, bags were packed, and soon, they were on their way to live their dream.
Stepping Back in Time
Their first day was a dive into Korea’s rich past with a visit to the iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace. The sight of its majestic gates left them wide-eyed.
“Is this real?” Priya whispered as they walked through the courtyards.
“Doesn’t it feel like we just stepped into a K-drama set?” Shreya asked, snapping pictures nonstop.
“It sure does!” Priya replied, being completely mesmerised by the beauty of the palace.
In Shreya’s words, “The guided tour was nothing less than a time machine which turned the tales of Joseon dynasty into living history. The most captivating experience was the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. Dressed in traditional attire, the guards moved with such grace and precision that it felt like stepping into another era.”
Shop, Snack & Repeat!
Their excitement hit the roof the moment they entered lively Myeongdong. A paradise for K-pop fans, it had everything from albums to posters featuring their favourite idols.
“Oh my gosh, look at this EXO lightstick!” Priya squealed, clutching it like a trophy.
The street food was just as much a highlight as the shopping. Tteokbokki, Hotteok, skewered meat, and tornado potatoes—it was truly a feast for the senses.
“Why does everything taste better on a stick?” Anika laughed, munching on fried fish cakes.
Love Locks and Towering Views
Hiking to Namsan Tower was both exhausting and exhilarating for the group. As they reached the top, the sprawling view of Seoul took their breath away, making every effort worth it.
“This city is something else,” Shreya said, leaning against the railing.
“Imagine watching the sunset from here”, snapping pictures of the skyline.
Wandering around they came across several love locks at the base of the tower. The idea immediately clicked and Anika said, “Let’s leave one for our trio!”
They bought the perfect red-colour lock from a nearby stall and even found a space for it on the railing. They scribbled their names on it, closed their eyes, made their wishes and secured the lock on the railing.
“Here’s to more adventures,” Shreya said as they tossed the key together.
A Sobering Visit to the DMZ
The group decided to balance the fun with a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). It was a humbling experience, standing at the line that divides North and South Korea.
In Shreya’s words, “While wandering around the border, their guard informed them that this is one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world. He also told them about its history, what is its significance and its current role between North and South Korea.
The guide’s stories about the Korean War and its ongoing impact were eye-opening. It was a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Seoul but gave them a deeper understanding of the country that they admired so much.
Bustling Busan Vibes!
Next up their itinerary was Busan, and the vibe was refreshingly different.
“This is like the chill cousin of Seoul,” Anika explained as they explored Gamcheon Culture Village and its colourful houses, creating the perfect Instagram backdrop.
Relaxing on Haeundae Beach with iced drinks in hand, they joked about spotting zombies, thanks to their love for the movie, ‘Train to Busan’.
At Jagalchi Fish Market, they tried fresh sashimi and were amazed to see the endless seafood options. “I think I just found heaven,” Priya said, biting into a grilled squid skewer.
Parting Thoughts…
“This trip was insane. I feel like we lived a whole season of a K-drama. It was everything we dreamed of and more. But we can always have a second season of this series. What do you guys think?” Shreya smilingly concluded.
