Love in the Clouds: Suraj’s Meghalaya Adventure with Thrillophilia
Have you ever wondered why Meghalaya is called ‘Halfway to Heaven’?
Most would say it’s because of its jaw-dropping beauty and while that is true, I craved for more. I wanted to immerse myself in its magic: wandering through forests, swimming in crystal-clear lakes, climbing mountains, and uncovering every secret it holds.
One day, while scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon an ad by Thrillophilia where they were providing some really exciting tour packages for Meghalaya. To me, it was the perfect excuse to escape work, recharge, and pack my bags for the ultimate adventure. That ad was my golden key to unlocking the beauty of ‘Halfway to Heaven’ and I wasn’t going to miss out on a chance like this.
Who else could make a romantic destination like Meghalaya more perfect than your special someone? Without a doubt, I asked my partner to accompany me on this exciting adventure and experience romance in the ‘Abode of Clouds’.
So let me take you through some of the highlights of my trip, proving why Meghalaya is truly one of the most romantic places in India.
Magical Sunsets
It is no secret that sunsets have a way of transforming any ordinary moment into a romantic experience. Luckily, we got to witness plenty of stunning sunsets throughout our trip, making each day memorable and magical for us.
Even on our leisure days, we would not miss out on this beautiful experience. We would open up our windows, envelope ourselves in a cosy blanket, grab a hot cup of coffee or tea and spend the evening admiring how gracefully the sun bids farewell. Also, hats off to Thrillophilia for securing such fantastic places to stay, all with beautiful views that made sunset watching an unforgettable experience.
We witnessed the best sunset of our lives at Laitlum Canyon and till date I cannot find the appropriate words to describe its beauty. But to be honest, whether we were experiencing the local culture in villages like Nongjrong or Mawlynnong, boating on Ward’s Lake, exploring waterfalls like Elephant Falls or Nohkalikai Falls, every corner of Meghalaya rewarded us with breathtaking views of the sunset.
So if Meghalaya is on your bucket list, brace yourself for some of the most unforgettable sunsets of your life.
Enchanting Falls
Meghalaya is home to around 16 major waterfalls, each one equally capable of taking your breath away. During our romantic escape to Meghalaya, we got a chance to explore some of the most prominent ones.
Starting with the mighty Nohkalikai Falls, it was the most splendid creation of God that I had encountered. It was a huge and graceful waterfall whose roar echoed through the lush valleys. Due to the strong currents we could not get very close to it, but even from a distance we could feel its cold and refreshing mist.
My personal favourite if you ask was hands down the Krang Suri Waterfalls. Firstly, because it was so pretty that it felt like stepping into a fairytale. Secondly, because it was the one and only waterfall where we had the liberty to let out our inner child and swim freely in it. It had calm and crystal clear waters which made it perfect for swimming.
Apart from these two, we also explored a few other beautiful waterfalls like the Elephant Falls, Phe Phe Falls and Byrdaw Falls.
Pristine Lakes
I am certain you must have seen pictures on the internet of boats on a nearly invisible lake, creating the illusion as if it is floating in the air. It is the famous Dawki Lake of Meghalaya, known for its spotless and crystal clear waters.
I consider myself one lucky man who got to experience a scenic and romantic boat ride on this beautiful lake with the love of his life. Sitting beside your partner, fingers intertwined with each others’, a lovely boat ride amidst the picturesque scenery, what else could one ask for?
If you are planning a trip to Meghalaya and looking for the perfect romantic experience to share with your partner , this is it! I am sure, just like me, you will return with a bunch of joyful memories and a heart full of love and content.
Local Food Tasting
If your partner is also a huge foodie like mine then what could be more romantic than taking her on a local food tour.
I agree that the local dishes here may look quite different from what most Indians are accustomed to, but believe me, skipping them would mean missing out on an incredible culinary experience.
We explored plenty of local cafes, stalls and restaurants to try out the best local foods we could get. My favourite was Jadoh which is a Meghalayan Biryani. To be honest, I didn't even know that there is something called a Meghalayan Biryani until I saw it on the menu. It was very unique, full of flavours and tasted heavenly.
We also tried the momo here which were extremely juicy and soft and honestly, the best momo I’ve had till date. Some other dishes that I would really recommend to all the readers are Dohklieh, Minil Songa and Pu Tharo.
Abode of Clouds!
Saving the finest for the end, one place that absolutely took our breaths away and left us completely speechless was the Laitlum Canyon. Take my words for it, your Meghalaya tour is not complete if you haven’t visited this dreamy location.
Your journey starts on a giant lush green mountain towards the Shillong Peak, the highest peak in the region. First of all, it was the most scenic and soothing car ride that I had experienced so far. We played soft lofi Bollywood music in the background and simply soaked in the mesmerising views around us.
Our excitement peaked when we entered the fog and our driver informed us that the car was passing right through the clouds. I am falling short of words to explain that feeling of first time touching, smelling and breathing in the clouds.
So these were few of the many reasons why you should pack your bags and fly off to Meghalaya now. No matter if you are a couple, family or a group of friends, I am sure this destination will be as epic as it was for me.
